I am utterly baffled as to how the graduation of my high school calc teacher's kids is front page news on a state-wide paper... WTF? How are fluff pieces front page, even on a Saturday?

Heath Ledger died.

I'm pretty much immune to non-bandom celebrity shenanigans, up to and including death... but this actually makes me kinda sad and I'm not really sure why.
It's been brought to my attention that I have forgotten to mention that I have a new nephewlet! Eep!

He was born on Monday (haha, Labor Day, good joke, Alex. *frowns at bebe*) at a little after 2 AM.

He's quite small (well, 7 lbs 14 oz at birth, so not *that* small, but BABY!) and newborn-funny-looking. I'll post a couple pics when I get my hands on them. (He has monkey toes! They're wretchedly silly looking and adorable!)

I am still annoyed at him for being a few hours too late to be a Spencer Smith baby. *pouts at Alex*

His big brother has yet to drop him on his head, so all round I'm counting the first couple of days in the win category. \o/

(I don't know why I've been so quiet here lately. It's not really that I have nothing to say because I never have anything *important* to say but I rarely let that stop me from, ya know, talking. I half-way don't even realize I'm not posting because I keep composing LJ posts in my head and I just don't notice that I never actually put them down and watch them scroll by on my f-list. Silly me. I shall work on this communication-y thingie because I know I'm rubbish at it. If you are feeling neglected, tell me so!)

I'm gonna go shower now so I'll be ready to get Sprog#1 off the preschool bus later in case his mommy isn't back yet with Sprog#2.

(For reference, for those that don't know/don't remember/don't know what the frick I'm blathering about: Sprog#1 = my nephew Luke, aged 3. Sprog#2 = my nephew Alex, aged 3 days. & thier mommy is my next eldest sister, Aileen. These would be the kidlets I'm going to be taking care of full-time for most of the next year.)
The Smoky Mountains were gorgeous. Vacation was lovely and so very needed. I love my friends. And many thanks to Laura for getting us there and back in one piece. ♥

So, yes, back to the daily grind. And fighting through skip=200 on my f-list. Actually, I started at about skip=240 and have currently fought through to 160. Not too bad as progress goes.

Things I have learned thusfar:

1. Mandy Patinkin abruptly quit Criminal Minds? - Official Statement

2. I may have to forgive Jon Walker for the generally unattractive beard due to extreme hotness. )

Also? I keep opening fic & stuff in new tabs so I can get to it eventually without distracting too much from the reading of my f-list. My firefox window may explode from this practice. Oops.
♥ you, firefox

At the University Senate meeting today, WKU Provost Dr. Burch announced that she would not endorse the University Senate's reccomendation to implement a Plus/Minus grading system for the Fall '08 semester.

Not that this will personally affect me or anyone I know, but I know I have some interested parties on my f-list who will be glad to hear that, after weighing the totality of the issues, that is the decision Dr. Burch reached.

If you haven't heard yet, all paid accounts are offered a free extra week because of the power outage problem. Just go here, follow the nifty link, click a button, and *poof*, free week of paid LJ.

Strep throat officially sucks. But on the upside, I got to go to the doctor who's known me since before I was born (literally - he did mom's pre-natal care), who I haven't seen in years, which was oddly pleasant.
And, if the flashbacks to childhood weren't strong enough already, he prescribed me liquid amoxycillin because my throat was hurting too much for me to want to think about opting for pills (in fact, I almost opted for the shot). So yes, I'm taking pink bubblegum flavored antibiotics that are one of my strongest, overriding memories from childhood, because I got a damn lot of throat and ear infections when I was little. Stupid tonsils.

In other news, I turn 21 in less than two weeks. Which is awesome. :)

My sister Susan gave me the option of, instead of getting a birthday present, her giving me cash right before I go to Amsterdam... which was obviously my pick. As she owes me approximately a half billion favors for reasons I won't go into now, this is a very good thing. Yay Amsterdam money!

This has been your RL update for the day. Fannish update pending due to the fact that I still haven't watch the finale of Numb3rs. It can't possibly upset me as much as CJ, can it? No, wait, don't tell me, I don't want to know.

Ooh, House finale tonight! I just remembered that and it brightens my day.

ETA: I almost forgot to mention, I won second place at the weekly icon challenge over on [livejournal.com profile] jordan_icons.

1 = The one that won.
2 = An alternate version of #1.
3 = The other icon I entered in the challenge.

What killed LJ the other day, in case you hadn't heard already.

Also, according to my stomach, eating leftover chinese food straight from the fridge first thing in the morning after drinking A Lot the night before is not a great idea. Oh well.

I should be showering and/or packing stuff up and putting it in the car, but I still have time.

Dude! Best Week Ever wins at life.
How come nobody told me that some kid at an interview with the president at Kansas State University asked him if he'd seen Brokeback Mountain?
That's just... priceless.
Might've been better if dubya could have come up with something to say other than, "Hehe, I.. uh... haven't seen it."

Weather is a crazy thing.
Tornado danger has more or less passed now, but I just spent like 20 minutes hiding from the storm in a hallway with no windows.
The part that's crazy to me is that the school actually cancelled all the night classes for tonight. Normally they don't cancel classes until, like, people *die*. Crazy stuff.

Damn weather. This is not what I need when I'm supposed to be putting together an outline for my Eng 300 term paper.

ETA: Damn emergency weather alerts ate the first half hour of Bones. Damn Fox bastards.

All eight members up for re-election to the Pennsylvania school board that had been sued for introducing the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to evolution in biology class were swept out of office yesterday by a slate of challengers who campaigned against the intelligent design policy.

Do we all remember how yesterday I was convinced that Aileen's new husband, Francisco, blowing up her car's engine was my third bad thing to complete my set and it had just gotten lost? Well, I was wrong. Very wrong.

This morning, on his way to work in mom's Cutlass (that I told her yesterday not to let him drive), he wrecked it (currently undrivable, future unknown) - and here's the kicker - to avoid running over a dog.

Okay, so yeah I feel very strongly about dogs in general and *my* dogs in particular, but I do *not* advocate risking *human* lives to save animal ones. If you cannot *safely* avoid the animal, it is almost always better to slow down as much as possible and hit it than to hit something else, not least of which because when you have a car accident, you can never be sure that you're only going to endanger yourself.
Apparently no one ever told Francisco this.

So Bruce is taking him to work in the Jimmy and then coming back. Mom drove the Thunderbird to work and I drove it back so Aileen could drive it to *her* work. Aileen is *severely* displeased with this whole marriage deal and her husband in particular just now.
It didn't help that right when she got herself and baby all put in to the car to leave (running late already), Gallahad jumped in the backseat and sat down and looked at her like "Okay, now I'm ready to go." I forcefully explained to the dog that he could *not* go to work with her and that he needed to get the *hell* out of the car before I kicked his ass. Which, surprisingly enough, actually worked.

So now I'm going to go back to sleep because I've only had two hours of sleep thusfar.

I have no idea how we're getting Zoe to the play tonight.

Musical cars, round 3. The music is playing faster and faster and we're running in smaller and smaller circles. I really want to not have to continue this metaphor to the next level.

You know what really worries me? Since Aileen's engine blowing up was not, as I previously thought, the last in MY set of three, and instead was the start of her OWN set, that puts us both at 2, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hopefully it is not another car because aside from mom's right-hand-drive work vehicles, we only have 2 left to spread between 5 drivers and 6 separate people needing to be different places.

This week needs to get DONE with already!

( Aug. 17th, 2005 06:57 pm)
Oh yeah, and while I'm thinking about it, apparently I de-railed the karma train somehow and so the third bad thing that I was due, to complete my set, hit my sister instead.
Aileen's lovely new husband drove her car out of oil and blew up the engine. It is *dead*. So now we are seriously playing musical cars, round 2. And Aileen is panicking because that's what she's good at.
I guess now I know what to tell dad to get Aileen as a wedding present.

And apparently Madonna broke several bones in a riding accident. I'm just a font of bad news this week, aren't I?

Peter Jennings died.

Queer As Folk ended.

Guess which one I'm more upset about.

(...guess the icon gives it away, huh?)

I think Sharon Gless said it best: "It sucks that it's over."

ETA: Oh yeah, and I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. ...except for the part where Christopher Lee and Johnny Depp hugged because my brain kept trying to tell me that it was Sarumon and Jack Sparrow...

ETA2: QAF finale spoilers )

ETA3: The new Showtime series "Weeds" about the suburbanite pot-selling mom? Fucking hilarious. I am in love with it.

ETA4: (well, it's better than spamming my lj with a billion different posts, right?) Anyway, the second Harry Potter movie is randomly on Disney and it occurred to me that I haven't actually watched this one... possibly since it came out in theatres. Crazy. I was like... I don't remember watching *any* of this! o.O;;; (/random)
